I am the pastor of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church (LCMS) in Tulsa, OK. I was ordained into the Holy Ministry in August of 2002, serving for three years in Houston prior to accepting the call to serve Grace. I received a ThM in Historical Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary in 2000 before studying at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis in 2000-2001. Right now I am working on a DMin in Liturgical Studies at Catholic University of America. My wife, Lisa, and I have been married for nine years (August 2000) and are blessed with two children, Owen (6) and Megan (4). I enjoy spending time with the family, following sports, and playing hockey and golf, all while drinking the beer that I brew.

I notice you list a lot of good Oregon beers. Having lived in Portland for four years, I enjoyed many of them.

Tim,
I am from Oregon. The breweries in the state are without compare, in my biased opinion. This summer I am doing a brewery tour in Oregon. My brother-in-law lives in Portland. He and his wife will join me and my wife for a swing through Portland (McMenamins Edgfield), Hood River (Full Sail), Bend (Deschutes), and Newport (Rogue). It should be a great time!

Hey Mason,
Here’s another shout-out from a confessional Lutheran layman dying in the vast liveral wilderness known as Oregon! I was drawn to your blog by the fantastic “Hybelspong” piece, but an ever-widening smile lit my facial features when I saw the list of brewery links. Truly, the only liberal status quo that I never want to see change around these parts has everything to do with the copious amount of hops to be had!!!
Perhaps, when you’re out his way come summertime, you can swing by the newly-minted Max’s Fanno Creek Brewpub in Tigard, which is the closest microbrewery to our place, and serves up some darned tasty beverages (love that Scottish Ale and Farmer’s Daughter!) We’ll be gone the first week of July to Victoria for ScotDance Canada (our two oldest daughters are Scottish Highland dancers!), and also the third Saturday of July for the Portland Games (where there is also much good beer to be found!)…but still, I’ll bet there’s some good conversation to be had here.
Also…HUGE hockey fan! Go Flyers!!!!(and Sharks, too!)

Sean,
I was born in Newberg and most of my extended family are in the area. My wife and I will be in Oregon this summer for a brewery tour with her brother and his wife. They live in Beaverton. We will go from Portland to Edgefield McMenamins, to Full Sail in Hood River, to Deschutes in Bend, to Rogue in Newport, and back to Portland. We will spend the night in each place.
Our itinerary is fairly set, but if any time opens up I will definitely send you an email. Please give me your contact information.
Go Stars!

Mason, I was thinking about you this morning and thought I’d type your name into my google search bar, and whala – here you are!! It’s great to see what you’re doing and see your smiling face here. I only have a moment – my wife has a big fat breakfast sandwich here and a cup of coffee for me – but I plan on checking out your site….blessings, MT

Pastor Beecroft:
Stumbled upon your blog in my journey away from heterodoxy and a return to confessional/traditional Lutheranism. I reside in Michigan…can you get any Michigan beers in your area? If so, look for Bell’s… one of the best microbrews in the country. Love your beer list and love your blog

Mason!
How are you?! It has been so long since we’ve seen each other. Do you even remember me? I worked with you at Bertram, McKee & Assoc. back in 1999-2000. I was a non-denominational Protestant looking into Roman Catholicism. I sure would like to talk to you about some things. I left a message at your church with my contact info. Please call me.

Frank,
I do remember you. I am just back in town from retreats and will call you next week. We have an ordination on Sunday so things are quite hectic. I look forward to seeing how you are doing.

Pastor Beecroft,
saw your church’s video on iMonk’s blog. Lutheran church services here in Austria look nothing like that!
Did they disown you down at DTS when they saw that video

Wolf,
Most Lutheran church services in America look nothing like that either! Sadly, we have jettisoned a rich Christ-centered heritage for contrived rituals of spontaneity that manipulate emotions and then baptize them as authentic spiritual encounters… I’ll hold off on my usual rant.
I should send the video to some of my DTS friends. Of course I was disowned there when I became a Lutheran.
Blessings on your ministry in Austria-

Dear Mason,
I received your blog today thru a Google watch list on Christian Persecution.
I too am a pastor, Calvary Chapel, and I work among persecuted Christians living in the Arab world. Before I read your sermon I decided to read your bio & the comments. Does it strike you as odd that most of the people making comments were more interested in your beer list than in your teaching of God’s Word?
I say this with love for the Lord and love for those of us (you too) called to serve Him. People need the Gospel and many of the brethren throughout the world are actually being put to death because they love Jesus, not out of boredom. Please put the beer aside and get serious with the truth. The persecuted church and even the bored Christians need you to be focused on the things that matter.

Denny,
Blessings on your proclamation of Christ crucified in the Arab world.
The context of ministry there is much different than in the West, which is where I have been placed. My concerns, obviously, would be different if I were in the Arab world.
And my piety would be different if I were a member of Calvary Chapel. As a Lutheran, however, my conscience is not bound in what I eat or drink. I am free in the Gospel of Jesus Christ to receive God’s gifts with thanksgiving, in moderation. I am serious about brewing and enjoying beer. This does not preclude me from being serious about proclaiming the Gospel.
I am amazed that you would find it necessary to post such an indignant remark on the blog of a person you have never met out of some feigned sense of Christian love. I wonder if you would understand yourself as the weaker brother in this area? I doubt it.
Pax et bonum,
+Mason
